Nebula Texture Plugin; ability to have several textures for the same object

Unless I'm missing something important, users don't have the ability to have several textures for a single object, and toggling them from the "manage" list. Let's say I have two really good, yet different photos of the Andromeda Galaxy that I want to display. It would be very nice to select which to be shown from the list of textures.

This might need a switch/selector to "replace/override built-in textures by multiple sets of user textures". Maybe not even as plugin. Should it be even stackable? But I still wait for someone to come up with a large set (say, at least 100 Messier-class objects) of coordinate-referenced hand drawings before I see fundamental motivation to actually developing this.
