MPV won't play subs marked "default" in filename

These are subs that I know work fine because they did before I changed all the file names to *.eng.default.srt whereas before they only had the language identifier in them.

I need this to work for numerous reasons. So I can check the subs for sync and I need them named this way so the proper sub is selected by default in emby. MPV is the best quick player for my purposed so I need to figure this out ASAP.

I believe you need to set sub-auto to fuzzy and it will work, assuming your issue is that they aren't automatically picked up.

Pass --sub-auto=fuzzy on the command line or set sub-auto=fuzzy in your mpv configuration file (see https://mpv.io/manual/stable/#configuration-files).

The only settings file I can find is in the directory with MPV. It is an XML file and I tried to add the argument but cannot save the file since it says access denied.

This is all that is in the XML file with the added argument, I did not know where to put it

I tried it but it did not change anything. Subs with .eng.default. in the filename do not show but if I remove "default" the work as intended.

The location of the settings file is specified in the docs here for Linux and MacOS (~/.config/mpv/mpv.conf) and here for Windows (%APPDATA%\mpv\mpv.conf). Note that it might not exist yet so first open the parent directory (~/.config/mpv or %APPDATA%\mpv) and create a new mpv.conf inside.

I finally got around to trying this. I used Notepad++ to create the mpv.conf file with the argument sub-auto=fuzzy inside and nothing has changed, the subs still don't show in MPV but work perfectly in emby or if I strip the "dafault" from the filename.

Well the problem isn't actually solved. Sure, now it shows the sub marked as "default" but it also shows all subs that it actually shouldn't because they are named in a way not to show. Plus it does not PICK the "default" sub as the one to be played so this is actually more useless than it was before.

Now. is there a way to get MPV to actually play the "default" sub by default? I mean what is the point of it being default if MPV doesn't play it by default.

MPV was my go to video player for checking videos and especially the subs for sync but now it is hard to use when I have six subs shown as playable but none have names, just numbers...kinda the purpose of marking it "default".
