Set volume on the first playlist element

I prefer the music volume to be about 50%, but the video volume to be louder. However I'd also like to not have the volume changed individually for each track in a playlist, in case I set it to something else manually. This is what I thought would work, but it doesn't seem to, any idea why?

I suspect the retrieval is probably correct, but the condition doesn't seem to be evaluated at the correct time. When I do this, it only prints when I launch mpv, and doesn't print when I open a file/switch track.

It isn't correct. Read the manual for how to retrieve properties.

I wouldn't exactly call it incorrect either, but thanks for the pointer in the right direction.

You were just retrieving the properties without observing them. In that case playlist-pos will have the initial value of -1.
