Cities on planets

In another discussion, there was mention of cities on planets for use in missions.

Some ideas about that:

• Visually cities could be represented by a texture splatted onto the surface of the planets, much as the lightning strikes are already done. The city textures could have an emittance channel so their lights/glow would show up nicely on the dark side of the planets.
• They could also be represented as snis_entities, possibly, allowing them to have various stats, and get involved in battles, allowing them to be fired upon, and possibly to fire back in defense.
• There would have to be some method to city placement, either manual placement, or some procedural method to place cities most probably along coast lines, and avoiding placement out in the middle of oceans.
• Science should be able to scan cities for ... I don't know what.
• Lua scripts should have access to city information for mission scripting. Exactly what this looks like, I'm not sure.

I don't know if cities should be textured, and part of the combat system,
But :

• I do think there should be at least one capital city on some planets.
• They should have a visible marker (with a color dedicated to the “city” category).
• This MUST be a SNIS_Entity to be usable in future features, and in LUA... But maybe not as cities, but as “surface_object” subcategory “City” 😉

That way, you can work on cities today, but tomorrow...
SCIENCE might be able to scan... exploitable resources on the ground, lost outposts, etc...

Maybe away missions could simply be text based D&D style missions. Dice rolls, etc... If a crew member dies they are blocked for the next 5 minutes or some other punishment?

Maybe an attack city from space option? Satellite system defence? I know this is probably way too much, but just a thought.
