CSS image-set instead of an img Tag

I would see usage for a function providing the css image-set attribute, instead of the img tag. It's usable on Chrome, Edge, Safari only Firefox is lagging behind for some reason and obviously IE.

background-image: image-set( "foo.png" 1x,
                             "foo-2x.png" 2x,
                             "foo-print.png" 600dpi );

I would basically hope for a helper function which returns the whole css attribute and value with the paths set.
