What implies a decoder being of a type or another?

Hello.
In documentation there is the list of the types of decoders but there's no explanation about which characteristics they have and what implies that a decoder was of one type or another. I mean... what if web-accesslog decoders aren't "web-log" type ones? An brief explanation of every type should be welcomed
